Coins of the Comoro IslandsTokens issued on behalf of the Société Anonyme de la Grande Comore
The Société Anonyme de la Grande Comore was the largest company and largest landowner on the island of Ngazidja. It was a French-owned company, founded by Léon Humblot in 1886, with plantations growing various tropical crops: vanilla, sisal, coconuts, ylang ylang, and cacao. They also had a sawmill and wholesale and retail outlets in the island's capital, Moroni.
During and shortly after the First World War there was a shortage of money on the island and the company issued its own tokens, which it used to pay its employees and which were accepted at its shops. Four denominations were issued.
