Coins of the Comoro Islands

Coins issued by the French colony of the Archipel des Comores

With the independence of Madagascar and the granting of self-government to the Comoros, the time was ripe for a colonial series of coins. Like all French and French colonial coins, they were struck at the Monnaie de Paris mint. There were five denominations: 1 franc, 2 francs, 5 francs, 10 francs and 20 francs. By this time the Comorien franc was no longer subdivided into centimes. It was equivalent to the CFA franc and worth 2 French (metropolitan) centimes.

Note that there were test versions of all the coins of the series, 1700 specimens of each denomination being stuck in 1964. With the exception of the word "ESSAI", they were in every respect identical to the coins released for general use later that same year.

All of these coins may still be found in general circulation, although they are becoming increasingly rare.
