Coins of the Comoro IslandsPrestige issue minted for the Ali Soilihi revolutionary government
In 1975, one month after independence from France, the government of the Comoro Islands was overthrown in a coup d'etat that installed a revolutionary socialist regime. In addition to minting the 1975 50 franc coin, in early 1976 this government, now led by President Ali Soilihi, authorised the issue of three prestige coins, one of silver, with a face value of 5000 francs, and two of gold, with face values of 10 000 and 20 000 francs.
Note that these coins were not issued by the monetary authority (Institut d'Emission des Comores) but in the name of the Etat Comorien and were never available in the Comoros, but were sold directly to collectors on the international market.
